Cboe and S&P Dow Jones Renew Partnership Until 2051, Eye Blockchain-Based Options

      TLDR

      • Cboe Global Markets and S&P Dow Jones Indices have renewed their S&P 500 options licensing partnership, extending it until 2051.
      • The renewed agreement includes provisions for exploring tokenized derivatives, though no specific products have been launched yet.
      • S&P 500 options (SPX) achieved record volume of 970.6 million contracts in 2025, with daily averages reaching 3.9 million.
      • Following the announcement, Cboe’s stock price jumped over 6%.
      • This development aligns with broader tokenization initiatives from major players including NYSE, BlackRock, Nasdaq, and DTCC.

In a significant development for financial markets, Cboe Global Markets and S&P Dow Jones Indices have renewed their licensing arrangement through 2051. This agreement maintains Cboe’s exclusive authorization to list options based on the S&P 500 Index, commonly referred to as SPX options.

This collaboration first began in 1983, marking the introduction of the inaugural S&P 500 index options offering from Cboe.

Beyond simply extending the existing arrangement, both organizations indicated they plan to explore innovative product offerings that go beyond conventional index derivatives. This exploration explicitly includes potential blockchain-based tokenized options.

      Understanding the Tokenized Options Concept

Tokenization involves converting conventional financial instruments into digital tokens that operate on blockchain networks. Various asset classes including equities, investment funds, and potentially options can be represented this way.

When applied to options, this approach could encode elements like strike prices, expiration parameters, and collateral requirements directly into smart contracts. Market data could then trigger automatic settlement processes.

Currently, this remains conceptual. Neither Cboe nor S&P DJI has introduced an actual tokenized offering or provided implementation schedules.

In an official statement, Catherine Clay, who leads S&P DJI as CEO, noted the continuous expansion of investor appetite for U.S. equity exposure. She emphasized the objective of making the S&P 500 benchmark accessible to all investors through their preferred formats.

Craig Donohue, serving as CEO of Cboe Global Markets, commented that the extended partnership provides flexibility to explore emerging technologies while maintaining consistency for current market participants.

      Trading Volume and Recent Performance

SPX options rank among the planet’s most actively traded index derivatives. The 2025 calendar year saw unprecedented volume of 970.6 million contracts, translating to roughly 3.9 million contracts daily.

Cboe’s stock experienced gains exceeding 6% in response to the partnership extension announcement.

This development fits within a broader pattern of leading financial organizations investigating blockchain applications. Nasdaq has partnered with Kraken’s parent company Payward to develop tokenized equities with voting capabilities.

The New York Stock Exchange is constructing a round-the-clock trading platform designed for tokenized equities and exchange-traded funds. NYSE also finalized a recent partnership with Blockchain.com to deliver tokenized U.S. equities to that platform’s user base.

The Depository Trust and Clearing Corporation, which safeguards assets exceeding $100 trillion, has announced plans to introduce its tokenization service this October.

BlackRock has entered this arena through collaboration with Ondo Finance. A consortium featuring BlackRock, Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, and DTCC has also explored tokenized equity opportunities.

S&P Dow Jones Indices has previously authorized the S&P 500 for blockchain applications. The company licensed the benchmark to Centrifuge for SPXA, promoted as the inaugural blockchain-native index fund bearing S&P DJI licensing.

Earlier in the year, S&P DJI granted licensing to Trade[XYZ] for an S&P 500 perpetual futures contract available on Hyperliquid.

Regulatory developments have also facilitated these initiatives. The Securities and Exchange Commission introduced an “innovation exemption” recently. This framework allows tokenized U.S. equities to operate on-chain within compliance parameters without requiring national securities exchange registration.

This regulatory adjustment followed the Clarity Act’s congressional stalemate. Options present greater tokenization complexity compared to stocks due to their expiration schedules, strike price mechanisms, and settlement protocols.

At present, Cboe and S&P DJI have merely expressed interest without unveiling functional products. The renewed licensing arrangement nonetheless secures their S&P 500 options collaboration through 2051 while maintaining flexibility for potential blockchain implementations.
