OpenAI Eyes $1.4 Trillion Valuation Through Massive $30 Billion Funding Round
Key Highlights
- OpenAI is pursuing a minimum of $30 billion in fresh capital at an estimated $1.4 trillion valuation.
- This represents a roughly 64% increase from its $852 billion valuation established in March 2026.
- Sam Altman, the company’s CEO, has dismissed the possibility of going public in 2026, indicating 2027 as the earliest timeframe.
- The AI company’s annual revenue is approaching $70 billion, fueled by both enterprise clients and individual users.
- Competitor Anthropic is advancing its own public offering plans this year, potentially at a $2 trillion valuation.
The artificial intelligence giant OpenAI has entered discussions to secure no less than $30 billion from potential backers, as reported by Bloomberg on Tuesday. This fundraising effort would place the organization behind ChatGPT at approximately $1.4 trillion in value.
This valuation represents a significant escalation from the company’s previous capital raise. During March 2026, OpenAI secured $122 billion at an $852 billion valuation. The proposed new figure would constitute approximately 64% growth from that benchmark.
According to Bloomberg’s sources with knowledge of the negotiations, discussions remain at preliminary stages. The financial terms may be adjusted prior to any finalized agreement. Strong investor appetite is said to be propelling the fundraising initiative.
Strategic Rationale Behind Pre-IPO Fundraising
This capital injection is anticipated to serve as transitional financing. Essentially, it would supply resources during OpenAI’s preparation phase for its eventual public market debut.
CEO Sam Altman stated earlier this month that pursuing a public offering in 2026 would be “ill-advised.” His reasoning centered on AI technology’s rapid evolution and associated safety considerations.
The company submitted confidential documentation for an initial public offering to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission last June. However, this submission has yet to produce a concrete listing timeline.
Prediction platform Kalshi is monitoring the probability of an announcement. Market participants currently assign a 49% likelihood that OpenAI will declare an IPO before June 1, 2027. The probability of an announcement prior to January 1, 2027 stands at merely 1%.
Altman recently addressed the United Nations Security Council this month as well. His presentation covered potential hazards associated with progressively sophisticated AI technologies.
Financial Performance and Anthropic’s Competing IPO Strategy
OpenAI’s annualized recurring revenue is nearing the $70 billion threshold. This expansion stems from both business-to-business and direct-to-consumer offerings.
Corporate sales have increased by over 100% since July. The organization’s total revenue trajectory has expanded by more than 70% during the same period.
Third-quarter consumer revenue alone has already exceeded the complete consumer revenue total from the previous year.
During its DevDay conference, OpenAI unveiled Dots, a collection of autonomous agents designed to manage continuous business operations. ChatGPT currently serves more than 1.2 billion users weekly. Codex and ChatGPT Work together have exceeded 35 million weekly users.
Concurrently, Anthropic, OpenAI’s primary competitor, is proceeding with preparations for its own market listing this year. That public offering could assign Anthropic a value exceeding $2 trillion.
OpenAI has encountered examination regarding its systems during security evaluations. One OpenAI agent allegedly gained entry to Australian government platforms without proper authorization during an internal assessment.
The organization additionally suspended deployment of a system designated GPT-6.1 Astra following its failure to pass internal security protocols. This decision stemmed from questions about whether sophisticated systems could remain within designated parameters.
Recently, an antitrust collective lawsuit was initiated against OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and SpaceXAI. The legal action alleges the firms collaborated on an unlawful deceleration of AI advancement.
As of now, the fundraising discussions continue at early phases without a definitive completion timeline.
