China's Gold Reserves Increase as Buying Trend Continues

China's gold purchasing continued to rise in August, with the People's Bank of China (PBOC) reporting an increase in reserves to 76.73 million troy ounces, up from 76.08 million ounces in July. This marks the 22nd consecutive month of gold accumulation by the central bank.

The reported value of China's gold reserves also saw a significant increase, reaching $350.08 billion, compared to $306.35 billion the previous month. This $43.7 billion rise is attributed to both the increase in gold prices and additional physical purchases, rather than solely new acquisitions during August.

The ongoing gold buying is part of China's strategy for reserve diversification, as the country seeks to reduce its reliance on dollar-denominated assets. Gold is viewed as a safer asset that carries no sovereign credit risk, making it an attractive option for Beijing amid global financial uncertainties. This sustained demand from the PBOC is expected to provide a structural support for gold prices in the market.
