Citi Australia CEO Questions Effectiveness of US Treasuries as Portfolio Hedge

Mark Woodruff, CEO of Citi Australia, has expressed concerns regarding the diminishing effectiveness of US Treasuries as a hedge against falling stock prices. Speaking at Citi's Australia and New Zealand investment conference in Sydney, he highlighted that rising government bond supply, persistent inflation, and higher neutral interest rates are undermining the traditional role of these bonds in investment portfolios.

Woodruff noted that a 10-year Treasury yield of around 5% would typically make bonds an ideal hedge for equity holdings. However, he indicated that the current economic climate, characterized by elevated consumer prices and interest rates, has weakened demand for Treasuries. He emphasized that while interest in hedging products has increased, this investment cycle is markedly different from previous ones.

The US 10-year yield recently reached its highest level since 2007, driven by rising energy costs that have contributed to inflation. This situation has prompted some investors to explore alternatives such as hedge funds, credit products, and commodities. Notably, Goldman Sachs has reported that oil is gaining traction as a portfolio hedge, while BlackRock has upgraded US Treasuries, arguing that higher yields provide a greater cushion against potential rate increases. The ongoing debate among investors will likely focus on inflation trends and their impact on the bond market.
