US Intelligence Reports Putin Ordered Sabotage Campaign Against NATO

US intelligence agencies have concluded that Russian President Vladimir Putin personally ordered an intensified campaign of sabotage and covert actions targeting NATO countries. This revelation comes in the wake of a failed drone attack in August on a cargo plane at Leipzig-Halle Airport in Germany, which is one of Europe’s largest air-cargo hubs. The attack aimed at an Antonov freighter used for transporting military aid to Ukraine, and while it did not result in casualties, it has raised concerns about escalating tensions between Russia and NATO.

The Wall Street Journal reported that aides to German Chancellor Friedrich Merz indicated that had the Leipzig attack resulted in significant casualties, Germany would have considered invoking NATO's Article 5, the collective defense clause. Investigators traced the operation to a unit of Russia's military intelligence, with logistics reportedly coordinated through Serbia, where seven suspects have been arrested. The drone attack is seen as part of a broader strategy of grey-zone operations, which have reportedly increased since August.

European officials have noted a rise in various forms of sabotage, including attacks on drone manufacturers in Estonia and Poland, as well as drone strikes on commercial vessels in the Black Sea. The Kremlin has denied any involvement in these activities, with Putin questioning the evidence of Russian participation. As tensions mount, the response from European governments and potential adjustments in US policy towards Russia will be closely monitored, particularly in light of existing energy agreements and sanctions.
