Super Micro Reports Strong Preliminary Revenue, Shares Surge 14%

Super Micro Computer, a manufacturer of AI servers, announced a significant increase in its preliminary revenue for the September quarter, leading to a 14% rise in its shares during after-hours trading. The company now expects revenue to be between $18.5 billion and $19.5 billion, a substantial increase from its previous forecast of $14.5 billion to $15.5 billion and well above analyst expectations of approximately $15 billion. This new revenue projection indicates nearly 280% growth compared to the same quarter last year, driven by heightened investments in AI computing infrastructure.

In addition to revenue growth, Super Micro reported an improvement in profitability, estimating a gross margin of 12% to 12.5%, surpassing its earlier guidance of 10.4% to 10.8%. Although these margins remain thin compared to industry standards, the increase suggests that Super Micro is gaining pricing power in a competitive market, where rivals like Dell Technologies have traditionally held a premium.

The positive update from Super Micro has also had a ripple effect on the broader server market, with shares of Dell and Hewlett Packard Enterprise rising by 6% and 5%, respectively, as investors reacted to the potential for increased demand in AI hardware. However, analysts noted that the details regarding the distribution of sales between major cloud providers and newer AI-focused companies remain unclear, which could impact the sustainability of this growth. A more comprehensive report is expected when Super Micro releases its official results on November 3.
