Crude Oil Futures Reach Highest Level Since Mid-September

Crude oil futures closed at $97.97 per barrel, marking an increase of $0.88 or 3.03% on the day. The price peaked at $98.32, while it dipped to a low of $93.58. A significant factor contributing to this rise was the unexpected decline in U.S. crude inventories, which fell by 8.6 million barrels, far exceeding the anticipated draw of 288,000 barrels. This inventory drop has bolstered the performance of West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil.

In the Middle East, tensions are escalating as Iran intensifies its pressure on shipping routes, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz. Reports indicate that Iran has increased its military operations in the area, aiming to maintain elevated oil prices ahead of the upcoming U.S. elections. This situation poses risks to regional oil exports and raises shipping and insurance costs, further complicating the market dynamics. Concurrently, Saudi Arabia is engaged in an ongoing conflict with Houthi rebels, with recent missile interceptions reported over Medina and drone strikes near Aden, resulting in casualties.

The rising transport costs are exacerbating the energy crisis, as higher freight and insurance expenses make oil deliveries more costly. Reports indicate that tanker costs have surged due to disruptions in shipping routes and vessel availability caused by regional conflicts. The Middle East's geopolitical tensions are contributing a risk premium to oil prices, while the unexpected inventory drop has provided additional upward momentum for WTI crude. Market observers are now closely monitoring whether these attacks will lead to sustained losses in actual oil exports, which could solidify the recent price rally.
