US Economic Indicators Show Mixed Results Amid Falling Yields

The Producer Price Index (PPI) for September in the United States rose by 6.3%, exceeding the expected increase of 5.3%. This data comes alongside other economic indicators, such as the Philadelphia Fed business index, which reported a decrease to +20.9 from the anticipated +28.4, and the Empire Manufacturing index, which significantly outperformed expectations at +25.50 compared to +10.25.

Retail sales for September increased by 0.8%, surpassing the estimate of 0.3%, although the prior month saw a stronger growth of 1.3%. Initial jobless claims stood at 199,000, slightly below the expected 200,000, while business inventories for August matched expectations with a 0.4% increase. The Atlanta Fed's GDPNow forecast for Q3 remains steady at 3.6%, indicating an improved outlook for consumer spending.

Despite the robust PPI data, US Treasury yields fell, with the 10-year yield decreasing by 9.9 basis points to 5.09%. This decline occurred amid concerns over potential credit issues in the artificial intelligence sector, particularly following reports of a significant fund focused on AI that experienced substantial losses. The situation has led to a dip in the US dollar, which is also influenced by upcoming discussions at the International Monetary Fund meetings regarding potential interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve.
