Delta Airlines Reports Q3 Earnings Miss Amid Rising Fuel Costs

Delta Airlines has reported a disappointing third-quarter earnings performance, marking its first earnings miss in two years. The airline's adjusted fuel price surged to $3.61 per gallon, a 60% increase year-over-year, contributing to a 62% rise in adjusted fuel expenses, which totaled $4.1 billion. The company absorbed over $500 million in fuel costs beyond its earlier guidance, prompting a reduction in its full-year outlook.

Despite the earnings miss, Delta remains optimistic about demand, projecting a fourth-quarter outlook that exceeds market expectations. The airline's pricing power appears robust, with a 14% increase in yield and a load factor of 86%, indicating that consumers are willing to pay higher fares. Delta noted that households earning $100,000 or more account for 90% of its sales, highlighting a trend where premium and corporate demand is driving revenue growth.

As of the latest figures, Delta's Q4 guidance anticipates an all-in fuel price of approximately $4.25 per gallon, which includes a refinery benefit. However, the company has acknowledged that its projections are based on current fuel prices, leaving little room for error should prices rise further. Shares of Delta Airlines opened down by 2.9% following the earnings report, with further insights expected during the upcoming conference call.
