Broader U.S. Stock Indices Show Modest Recovery After Recent Declines

The S&P 500, NASDAQ Composite, and NASDAQ 100 indices reached new record levels earlier this week but experienced declines on Wednesday and Thursday. Each index found support at their rising 100-hour moving averages, which helped stabilize prices and prompted modest buying activity today. Despite the recent downturn, the Dow Jones Industrial Average and Russell 2000 indices showed slight gains, indicating a rotation away from technology stocks rather than a complete withdrawal from the market.

Strong corporate earnings and investments in artificial intelligence have contributed to the resilience of the broader market, keeping it near record highs. However, concerns remain regarding whether these earnings can continue to meet expectations. A decline in oil prices could alleviate some inflationary pressures, benefiting consumers and businesses alike. Although oil prices have recently retreated, geopolitical uncertainties in the Middle East continue to pose risks to market stability.

The University of Michigan's preliminary consumer sentiment survey for October revealed a drop to 46.3, below expectations, driven by a significant decline in current conditions. While consumer expectations improved slightly, rising inflation expectations present a challenge for the stock market. The combination of weaker sentiment and increasing inflation concerns could lead to sustained high interest rates, which may impact stock valuations, particularly for growth stocks that rely heavily on future earnings.
