U.S. Stock Indices Reach Record Highs Amid Rising Trade Deficit and Oil Prices

U.S. stock markets experienced significant gains on October 6, 2026, with the S&P 500, Nasdaq Composite, and Nasdaq 100 all closing at record levels. The Dow Jones Industrial Average also rose, while the Russell 2000 index saw a decline, indicating uneven participation among smaller companies. The S&P 500 closed at 7,818.92, up 0.58%, and the Nasdaq Composite reached 27,599.79, up 0.45%.

The U.S. trade deficit for August widened to $105.6 billion, exceeding expectations of $102.0 billion and up from a revised $92.8 billion in July. This increase was attributed to a 4.3% rise in imports, driven by demand related to artificial intelligence infrastructure, while exports grew by only 1.4%. A wider trade gap can negatively impact GDP growth, although the increase in imports may reflect investment in productive capacity.

In the commodities market, crude oil prices rebounded after earlier losses, influenced by ongoing tensions in the Middle East. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) futures traded at $89.97 per barrel, up 0.60%. Meanwhile, gold and silver prices also saw gains, with spot gold rising to $4,163.40 and silver to $61.3570, amid geopolitical uncertainties that could drive demand for precious metals.
