US Crude Oil Stocks Decline in Latest Private Survey

Crude oil inventories in the United States decreased by 2.09 million barrels for the week ending October 2, according to a private survey. Gasoline stocks also saw a decline, falling by 1.37 million barrels, while distillate inventories increased by approximately 461,000 barrels during the same period.

The data comes from the American Petroleum Institute (API), which provides an early indication of oil stock levels. The API's report is released weekly on Tuesdays and is based on voluntary submissions from member companies, covering a significant portion of US oil capacity. In contrast, the Energy Information Administration (EIA) releases its report on Wednesdays, which includes mandatory reporting from refiners and other operators, offering a more comprehensive view of the market.

The differing methodologies of the API and EIA reports often lead to discrepancies in inventory figures, with the API serving as a preliminary gauge and the EIA providing the official count that influences market reactions. The EIA's data includes additional metrics such as domestic production and refinery utilization, making it a critical resource for traders and analysts.
