Perth Mint Reports Surge in Gold Sales Amid Price Decline

Sales of gold coins and minted bars at the Perth Mint in Western Australia reached approximately 47,000 ounces in September, marking a nearly twofold increase from August and the highest monthly total in seven months. This surge in sales occurred despite a significant drop in spot gold prices, which fell over 6% during the month. Year-on-year, gold sales were up around 29%, indicating a strong demand from retail investors who appear to be viewing the price decline as an opportunity to purchase more gold.

Silver sales also saw a notable increase, rising to about 605,000 ounces in September from roughly 334,000 ounces in August. This represents an 81% increase month-on-month and the highest level since March, although the annual growth was modest at around 4.5%. The Perth Mint attributed part of this increase to the launch of its new 2027 Year of the Goat coins, which are part of its popular Lunar series. Neil Vance, the Mint's general manager of distributors and product development, noted that collectors are consistently drawn to the series for its design and craftsmanship.

The Perth Mint, which is owned by the Western Australian government, is recognized as the world's leading producer of newly mined gold and Australia's largest refiner by volume. Its sales figures are closely monitored as an indicator of retail demand for precious metals in the region. As October progresses, the Mint's upcoming sales data will provide further insights into whether the current buying trend continues without the influence of new product launches.
