Dollar Strengthens as Global Bond Yields Rise Ahead of Trump-Xi Talks

The U.S. dollar has strengthened against all seven major currencies as global bond yields continue to rise, impacting stock markets ahead of significant talks between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping. The U.S. 10-year Treasury yield has reached 5.1226%, its highest level since 2007, while the 30-year yield has also increased. This rise in yields follows strong U.S. business activity data, raising concerns that the Federal Reserve may need to take further action to manage inflation. As a result, stock futures indicated declines for major indices, with the Dow industrial average down 178 points and the S&P 500 down 38 points.

The dollar's most notable gains were against the Japanese yen, which saw an increase of 0.28% to 158.74. Other currencies also experienced declines against the dollar, including the euro, British pound, and Australian dollar. The mixed signals from the Treasury curve, with shorter yields decreasing while longer yields rise, suggest a complex market environment. Japan's 10-year yield is at its highest since 1996, while Germany's yield is near a multi-year high of 3.57%.

In commodities, WTI crude oil prices have risen by 1.26% to $93.32, while precious metals like gold and silver have seen declines. The Swiss National Bank has maintained its policy rate at 0%, citing increased near-term inflation due to higher energy prices but only slight medium-term inflation pressure. The upcoming meeting between Trump and Xi is expected to influence market sentiment, particularly regarding U.S.-China trade relations and potential developments in the Middle East. Traders are advised to closely monitor announcements from this meeting, as well as scheduled U.S. economic data releases, including jobless claims and new-home sales.
