Deutsche Bank to Launch Regulated Bitcoin and Ether Custody Service by End of 2026

Deutsche Bank has announced plans to introduce a regulated custody service for Bitcoin and Ether aimed at European institutional and corporate clients by the end of 2026, contingent upon regulatory approvals from Germany's financial regulator, BaFin. This service will also support a limited selection of stablecoins and e-money tokens, including USDC, EURC, and EURAU, which is a euro-denominated token linked to German regulations.

The custody service will allow institutions to store and transfer digital assets without the need to develop their own infrastructure for key management. Gerald Podobnik, co-head of the corporate bank, emphasized that this offering is intended to complement traditional finance rather than replace it. This initiative has been in development for several years, with previous reports indicating a partnership with Taurus for custody infrastructure and a target launch date set for 2026.

Deutsche Bank's entry into the crypto custody market comes as the sector becomes increasingly competitive, with established players like Standard Chartered and BBVA already providing similar services in Europe. The bank's significant assets under management, approximately $2.2 trillion, position it to lower operational barriers for corporates and institutions seeking exposure to cryptocurrencies without managing their own custody solutions. This move aligns with broader regulatory trends in Europe and the United States aimed at facilitating institutional adoption of digital assets.
