Dollar General (DG) Stock Soars 8% After Crushing Q2 Earnings Expectations
Key Highlights

- Revenue reached $11.3 billion, representing a 5.2% year-over-year increase and slightly exceeding the $11.2 billion consensus

- Annual earnings outlook upgraded to $7.80-$8.00 per share from the prior range of $7.20-$7.45
- Shares of DG climbed 8.3% to reach $133.30 during Thursday’s premarket session
Shares of Dollar General surged 8.3% to $133.30 during Thursday’s premarket hours following the value retailer’s impressive fiscal second-quarter performance and upgraded annual projections.
Dollar General Corporation, DG
For the quarter that concluded on July 31, the retailer reported earnings of $2.48 per share, marking a substantial improvement from the $1.86 posted in the same period last year. Analysts had anticipated just $2.01. Revenue totaled $11.3 billion, reflecting a 5.2% gain and marginally exceeding the $11.2 billion analyst estimate.
Comparable store sales registered a 3.5% year-over-year improvement. Store traffic rose 2% while the typical purchase amount grew 1.5%.
The discount retailer also upgraded its annual earnings projection to a range of $7.80 to $8.00 per share, up from the previously announced $7.20 to $7.45 range. The company now anticipates revenue growth of 4% to 4.3%, compared to its earlier 3.7% to 4.2% projection.
According to FactSet data, analysts had been forecasting full-year earnings around $7.40 per share. The revised guidance substantially exceeds those expectations.
Management also increased its projected comparable sales range for the full year to 2.5% to 2.9%, versus the prior 2.2% to 2.7% outlook.
The impressive results come despite recent headwinds for the stock. Shares had declined approximately 7.5% year-to-date through Wednesday’s market close.
Challenges Leading Up to the Report
The operating environment presented several obstacles. Fuel costs continue running high, creating disproportionate pressure on the low-income consumers who make up Dollar General’s primary customer base.
Competitive dynamics intensified as Walmart implemented aggressive price reductions in recent weeks, forcing Dollar General to respond. This type of margin compression had been a significant investor concern.
Walmart’s earnings release the previous week showed disappointing comparable sales performance, triggering one of the retail giant’s sharpest single-day declines in years. Market watchers worried Dollar General might experience similar struggles.
Additionally, the company’s recently appointed CEO faces the ongoing challenge of earning credibility with investors who remained cautious following the executive transition.
Nevertheless, Dollar General has consistently delivered earnings that exceed analyst expectations for over four consecutive quarters.
Analyzing the Financial Performance
Wall Street forecasts don’t project Dollar General’s per-share earnings to reach double-digit levels again until fiscal 2031. The retailer generated over $10 per share annually from 2021 through 2023.
The ongoing consumer shift toward value-oriented shopping continues benefiting Dollar General. Persistent inflation has prompted more households to seek lower-priced alternatives, creating tailwinds for discount-focused retailers.
Dollar General finished Wednesday’s regular session with a modest 0.2% gain before Thursday’s substantial premarket rally.
