Dubai begins driverless transport trial at Bluewaters tourist district

Dubai has begun testing a driverless electric transport system at Bluewaters, exploring ways to link tourist destinations and residential areas to its metro network.

The trial forms part of Dubai’s search for cheaper ways to expand public transport without building more rail infrastructure.

Dubai Glydways will operate the system on a designated route at Bluewaters, the Dubai Holding-owned tourist destination off Jumeirah Beach, for four weeks, the UAE state-run Wam news agency reported.

The trial follows an agreement between the Roads and Transport Authority and US company Glydways to develop the emirate’s first automated transit network.

The Glydways system uses autonomous electric vehicles (EVs) that can travel in groups of more than 10, with less than a second between vehicles. Each vehicle carries four to six passengers, reaches speeds of up to 50 kilometres per hour and can travel up to 250km on a single battery charge.

The system can carry more than 20,000 passengers per hour in both directions. It can cut capital costs by up to 90 percent and operating costs by up to 70 percent compared with similar transport modes, the statement said.

The project includes plans to study routes linking Dubai Metro stations with tourist areas. These include a 2.8km route between National Paints Metro Station and Bluewaters, and routes serving Jumeirah Village Circle, Dubai Festival City, Business Bay and Mohammed Bin Rashid City.

Founded in 2016, Glydways develops automated transit networks using autonomous EVs. The company says its system costs 90 percent less than rail.

In April Dubai announced a AED34 billion ($9.3 billion) Gold Metro line, which will expand the transport network by a quarter.

The RTA opened its tram service in November 2014 and announced plans to expand the network in November 2024.
