OPEC Lowers Oil Demand Forecast Amid Ongoing Supply Risks

The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) has significantly reduced its oil demand forecast for 2026, cutting the expected growth to 400,000 barrels per day (bpd) from an earlier projection of 1.4 million bpd. OPEC Secretary General Haitham Al Ghais stated that this revision reflects the evolving conditions in the oil market throughout the year. Despite the downgrade, OPEC anticipates some deferred demand may materialize in 2027, suggesting a potential recovery in consumption next year.

Currently, oil prices remain elevated, with Brent crude trading above $105 per barrel and West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude above $92 per barrel. This price stability is largely attributed to ongoing tensions in the Middle East, which continue to pose significant supply risks. Recent incidents, including attacks on oil tankers near the Strait of Hormuz and a Houthi strike on Riyadh airport in Saudi Arabia, highlight the precarious situation in the region.

The combination of reduced demand forecasts and persistent supply risks complicates the outlook for oil traders. While demand may be weakening, the challenges in maintaining stable supply chains are likely to keep prices elevated. Until there is a notable improvement in the geopolitical landscape of the Middle East, OPEC's downgrade may not lead to a bearish sentiment in the oil market.
