ECB Chief Economist to Speak in Shanghai Ahead of Key Policy Decision

Philip Lane, the chief economist of the European Central Bank (ECB), is scheduled to participate in a panel discussion in Shanghai, China, on October 21, 2026. The event, which will focus on the international monetary system beyond the dollar, is set to begin at 04:15 GMT (00:15 ET) and will be a closed-door luncheon. While the ECB is expected to publish the text of Lane's remarks, direct policy guidance is not anticipated during this session.

The ECB's current policy landscape has seen the deposit rate increase to 2.50% following hikes in June and September. Market analysts and economists largely expect the ECB to maintain this rate during its upcoming meeting on October 29, with a potential increase in December. Recent comments from Lane highlighted concerns over rising energy prices, which he described as a second wave of the energy supply shock, impacting inflation and growth projections.

Bundesbank President Joachim Nagel, a member of the ECB's Governing Council, has indicated that while inflation risks remain elevated, there is no immediate urgency for further rate hikes. He noted that inflation expectations are anchored around 2%, and there has been no significant impact on price and wage setting from current inflation trends. ECB President Christine Lagarde has echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that the central bank must not react hastily to energy price fluctuations without clear evidence of second-round effects. The ECB's decision on interest rates will be announced at 13:15 GMT (09:15 ET) on October 29, 2026.
