ECB Interest Rate Announcement: Impact on European Equity Markets Today
Key Highlights
- European equity markets stabilized Thursday following Wednesday’s 1.4% decline
- ECB anticipated to implement a 25-basis-point rate increase, reaching 2.5%
- Brent crude oil maintained levels above $100 per barrel, intensifying inflation concerns
- Associated British Foods shares plummeted nearly 12% following disappointing Primark results
- Key U.S. inflation reports scheduled for Thursday and Friday may influence Federal Reserve policy outlook
European equity markets found stability on Thursday following their most significant downturn in eight weeks. Market participants awaited the European Central Bank’s monetary policy announcement scheduled for later in the trading day.
The benchmark pan-European STOXX 600 index remained relatively unchanged at 639.79 points. The index had experienced a 1.4% retreat on Wednesday amid rising energy prices.

Brent crude oil surpassed the $100-per-barrel threshold for the first time since July. This surge reignited inflation anxieties and prompted market participants to reconsider their expectations regarding the duration of elevated interest rates from major central banks.
Analysts widely anticipated the ECB would implement a 25-basis-point increase to its benchmark rate, elevating it to 2.5%. The monetary policy statement was scheduled for release at 12:15 GMT, with ECB President Christine Lagarde’s press briefing set to begin at 12:45 GMT.
Investors were particularly focused on Lagarde’s commentary regarding the inflation trajectory. The critical question centered on whether officials would hint at additional rate increases or adopt a more cautious, data-dependent posture.
“The forward guidance will attract the most attention—specifically whether the ECB will adopt a wait-and-see approach or indicate another potential increase,” noted Susannah Streeter, chief investment strategist at Wealth Club in London.
Market pricing suggested expectations for one additional rate increase before year-end, with one or two more adjustments anticipated in 2027.
Energy and Banking Sectors Show Strength
European energy stocks advanced 0.3%, benefiting from sustained high oil prices. Escalating tensions between Iran and the United States resulted in their most extensive attacks on maritime shipping in six months, providing additional upward pressure on crude prices.
Banking equities demonstrated positive momentum. Societe Generale climbed approximately 1.6%, Deutsche Bank advanced 1.3%, while Banco Santander increased 0.7%.
Technology and Consumer Discretionary Stocks Face Headwinds
Technology shares encountered selling pressure. ASML declined 1.1% while SAP retreated approximately 3%, ranking among the session’s most significant losers.
Associated British Foods emerged as the day’s most dramatic mover. The company’s shares plunged nearly 12%, heading toward their steepest single-session decline since January. The sell-off followed disappointing sales figures from its discount fashion retailer Primark.
D’Ieteren numbered among the STOXX 600’s top performers, surging nearly 5%. The Belgian conglomerate announced improved half-year earnings and revealed the appointment of a new chief executive officer.
German inflation figures registered at 2.9% for August, matching economist projections.
U.S. producer price index data was scheduled for release Thursday, with consumer price information set for Friday. Market participants assigned a 62% probability to a 25-basis-point rate increase from the U.S. Federal Reserve during its September 15-16 policy meeting.
The ECB’s policy determination and President Lagarde’s subsequent remarks continued to dominate market attention throughout the trading session.
