ECB Policymaker Signals Potential December Rate Hike Amid Inflation Concerns

European Central Bank (ECB) policymaker Joachim Nagel has expressed ongoing concerns regarding the inflation outlook in the euro area, although he does not indicate an immediate need for a rate hike in October. Nagel highlighted that inflation risks remain tilted to the upside, particularly due to rising energy prices, which could sustain elevated inflation levels for a longer period. Despite these concerns, he noted that there are currently no clear signs of second-round effects influencing price and wage setting, suggesting that the ECB may have the flexibility to wait before making further adjustments to interest rates.

As of September, inflation in the euro area reached 3.8%, raising concerns about the potential for temporary energy shocks to evolve into more persistent inflation. Nagel emphasized the importance of monitoring how companies and workers respond to these pressures, as aggressive cost pass-through and wage demands could complicate efforts to control inflation. However, he reassured that the situation has not escalated to that point yet, aligning with market sentiment that currently prices in a 79% chance of no rate hike in October.

Looking ahead, markets are anticipating a different scenario for December, with a 66% probability of a rate hike by then. Nagel's comments suggest that while October may be a time for patience, the ECB remains vigilant and ready to respond to evolving economic conditions. This duality in the outlook underscores the central bank's commitment to navigating the complexities of inflation management in the eurozone.
