Eurozone PMI Indicates Strongest Growth in Over Three Years Amid Rising Price Pressures

The final services Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) for the Eurozone in September registered at 53.0, matching preliminary estimates and reflecting an increase from 51.6 in August. The composite PMI also confirmed a reading of 53.1, up from 52.0 the previous month. These figures indicate that private sector business activity in the Eurozone has expanded at its fastest rate in nearly three-and-a-half years, driven by improved demand conditions and marking a full quarter of growth.

Growth was widespread across the region, with both manufacturing and service sectors reporting accelerated output. Notably, all five countries with Composite PMI data available experienced expansion, the first occurrence since November of the previous year. However, this growth comes alongside intensifying price pressures, as input costs and output charge inflation rates increased sharply, although they remained below the peaks observed in May.

The European Central Bank (ECB) faces challenges as consumer prices rose nearly 4% last month, raising concerns about inflation. The PMI data suggests that the Eurozone economy is performing robustly, with estimates indicating quarterly GDP growth of around 0.4%. This scenario complicates the ECB's ability to manage inflation, as the current economic resilience contradicts the notion that weaker growth would help contain rising prices. As a result, expectations are building that the ECB may need to tighten monetary policy further, which could support the euro and influence European bond yields.
