Elon Musk Projects SpaceX (SPCX) to Reach $3.5 Trillion Revenue Within a Decade
Key Takeaways
- Elon Musk forecasts SpaceX will generate $3.5 trillion in yearly revenue by 2033, powered by artificial intelligence.
- This represents a 35-fold increase from the company’s anticipated 2027 revenue of $100 billion.
- Morgan Stanley anticipates reaching $3.5 trillion by 2040, a full seven years beyond Musk’s timeline.
- Analyst consensus points to SpaceX generating $416 billion in sales by 2030, significantly below Musk’s projection.
- SPCX shares gained 0.9% Thursday before retreating 0.2% in Friday’s premarket session to $140.61.
Elon Musk has built a reputation for ambitious projections. His latest proclamation positions SpaceX to achieve $3.5 trillion in yearly revenue within the next decade.
SPCX shares traded at $140.61 during Friday’s premarket hours, slipping 0.2% following Thursday’s 0.9% advance. The stock remains barely above its June IPO level of $135.
Space Exploration Technologies Corp., SPCX
Musk’s forecast emerged after X user DogeDesigner highlighted a Morgan Stanley research note describing SpaceX as “attractively valued,” arguing investors continue to undervalue Starship’s potential. While Morgan Stanley also forecasts $3.5 trillion in revenue, their timeline extends to 2040 rather than 2033.
Aaron Burnett, CEO of investment firm Mach 33, noted that Morgan Stanley’s projection “was based on a number that’s almost half of the company’s stated goal and 10 years later than the company is targeting to achieve it.”
Musk entered the discussion directly. “My best guess for ~$3.5T revenue is roughly around 2033 fwiw,” he posted. Achieving this would require maintaining an 80% compound annual growth rate from the anticipated $100 billion in 2027 sales.
Analyst Estimates Fall Far Short
The investment community’s outlook paints a considerably different picture. Financial analysts forecast SpaceX will achieve $175 billion in 2028 revenue, climbing to $281 billion in 2029 and reaching $416 billion by 2030. Based on this trajectory, Musk’s $3.5 trillion target for 2033 appears extremely ambitious.
To put this in perspective, no American corporation has ever generated $1 trillion in annual revenue. Among Wall Street’s projections, Amazon stands as the first potential candidate to breach this threshold around 2028.
Morgan Stanley’s Adam Jonas, who maintains a Buy rating on SPCX with a $300 price objective, estimates that artificial intelligence alone will contribute $2.6 trillion to SpaceX’s 2040 revenue.
Artificial Intelligence Drives Growth Strategy
Artificial intelligence forms the cornerstone of Musk’s expansion strategy. The broader AI investment landscape does lend credibility to aggressive growth projections, though perhaps not at Musk’s projected velocity.
Nvidia recently forecast 70% growth for calendar 2027, surpassing the Street’s 45% consensus. Alphabet’s cloud division expanded 82% year-over-year in Q2, while its cloud services backlog reached $514 billion, representing nearly 400% year-over-year growth.
SpaceX has set an ambitious goal of conducting 10,000 Starship launches annually by 2030, synchronizing with President Trump’s updated space policy advocating increased NASA launch frequency. Construction on a new launch complex, Starbase Louisiana, is scheduled to commence in 2027, with the inaugural Starship launch from that location planned for 2029.
Musk has also revealed that Starship’s forthcoming Flight Test 14 will include an attempt to catch the rocket’s upper stage.
SPCX declined 0.27% to $140.49 in overnight trading Thursday and continued lower by 0.2% to $140.61 in Friday’s premarket session, tracking alongside S&P 500 futures which also fell 0.1%.
