Ethereum Foundation Recipients Transfer $11 Million in ETH to Kraken Exchange

Two wallets that received Ether (ETH) from an early distribution by the Ethereum Foundation have transferred 4,393 ETH, valued at approximately $11.1 million, to the Kraken exchange. This transaction occurred on Monday and has sparked discussions on social media regarding the potential sale of ETH by the Foundation. However, analysis from on-chain tracker Arkham Intelligence indicates that these wallets are two steps removed from the Foundation, suggesting that an exchange deposit does not necessarily equate to a sale.

The Ethereum Foundation originally distributed 59,751 ETH to an intermediary address nearly a decade ago, when the price of ETH was around $0.90. This address subsequently divided the coins into three parcels of approximately 18,000 ETH each, which were sent to separate wallets at a time when ETH was valued at about $2.13. The largest deposit made on Monday came from one of these wallets, amounting to about 2,998 ETH, or roughly $7.6 million, while the second wallet contributed around 1,395 ETH.

It is important to note that the Ethereum Foundation has previously sold ETH from its treasury, leading to close monitoring of any addresses associated with it. However, a wallet that received Foundation ETH years ago may not be under the Foundation's control today. The blockchain records only the transfer of coins to the Kraken deposit address, leaving the subsequent actions within the exchange opaque. Furthermore, the $11 million transfer is relatively small compared to ETH's typical daily trading volume, suggesting it is unlikely to significantly impact market prices.
