Ethereum Whale Reports $13.45 Million Loss Amid Year-Long Exit Strategy

An Ethereum wallet has reported a loss of approximately $13.45 million after moving nearly its entire position onto exchanges. This activity, flagged by on-chain analyst Ai Yi and reported by various outlets, reflects a year-long exit strategy rather than a sudden market dump. The wallet, which began acquiring Ethereum (ETH) in September 2025 at around $4,600, has since transferred 15,361 ETH back to exchanges at an average price of about $3,226, following a series of withdrawals that totaled 15,810 ETH at an average cost of $4,100.

The investor's strategy of averaging down by purchasing more ETH as prices fell has reduced their average cost but also increased their exposure during a declining market. As of October 12, ETH was consolidating around $2,500, significantly lower than the investor's initial purchase price. Had the investor retained their entire position until now, the losses would have been even greater, amounting to approximately $24.6 million based on current prices.

This wallet's activity is relatively small compared to the broader market dynamics, particularly the significant outflows from Ethereum exchange-traded funds (ETFs). In the week ending October 9, investors withdrew around $542 million from U.S. spot Ethereum ETFs, marking the largest weekly outflow since January. Analysts caution that such outflows do not necessarily indicate that all underlying ETH was sold on the market, as they reflect net redemptions rather than direct sales. The situation highlights the importance of monitoring broader market trends alongside individual wallet activities.
