StarkWare Introduces Privacy Layer With Shadow Accounts Feature on Ethereum L2

      Key Points

      • StarkWare has rolled out Shadow Accounts, enabling Starknet users to disconnect their primary wallets from DeFi platform interactions.
      • Each Shadow Account functions as a dedicated, permanent address for specific applications, drawing funds from the STRK20 privacy pool.
      • All transaction history, holdings and DeFi positions within Shadow Accounts stay publicly accessible on the blockchain.
      • Future expansion plans include support for borrowing, liquidity pools, derivatives, forecasting platforms and digital collectible markets.
      • This release builds on StarkWare’s June rollout of the STRK20 privacy infrastructure and confidential identity verification tools.

Starknet, an Ethereum layer-2 scaling solution, has introduced a privacy-focused wallet capability designed for decentralized finance participants. The new system goes by the name Shadow Accounts.

This innovation enables participants to engage with DeFi platforms while obscuring the connection between their activity and primary wallet addresses. StarkWare, the organization developing Starknet, made the announcement via X.

Shadow Accounts generate distinct addresses for each application. These addresses remain permanent rather than temporary.

      The Mechanics Behind Shadow Accounts

Participants populate their Shadow Accounts using protected balances. These protected funds originate from the network’s STRK20 privacy pool.

This architecture enables participants to maintain borrowing, exchange or additional DeFi holdings across multiple blockchain identities. A single participant can control separate accounts for different platforms.

The system obscures the link connecting a Shadow Account to its funding source. This complicates efforts to trace the account to the participant’s primary address.

However, the privacy comes with boundaries. Starknet documentation confirms that all holdings, transaction records and active positions within Shadow Accounts stay fully transparent on the blockchain.

In practical terms, observers can monitor what any Shadow Account contains and executes. What remains concealed is the identity of the primary wallet controlling it.

After a DeFi platform adds support for the capability, participants can link their wallets and toggle between transparent and private operation modes. They then transfer assets into a vault structure.

The Shadow Account maintains the participant’s holdings until withdrawal. Following withdrawal, assets return to a protected balance state.

      Roadmap for Additional Features

Currently, the functionality focuses primarily on vault operations. StarkWare indicated potential expansion into broader DeFi sectors.

Those sectors encompass providing liquidity, credit services, collateral borrowing and token staking. The organization additionally mentioned futures contracts, outcome betting platforms and marketplaces for non-fungible tokens.

This deployment represents one component of StarkWare’s comprehensive privacy initiative throughout 2024. The organization has unveiled multiple privacy-enhancing technologies in recent months.

During June, StarkWare presented its STRK20 privacy architecture. This architecture enables confidential transfers and concealed token holdings on Starknet.

The STRK20 privacy pool supplying Shadow Accounts operates within this architecture. It provides the foundational infrastructure for the new capability.

Also in June, StarkWare showcased a confidential identity verification mechanism. This mechanism permits participants to authenticate personal credentials without exposing complete identification documentation.

Shadow Accounts now join this collection of tools. Participants can utilize the capability through DeFi platforms that opt to integrate the technology.
