European Stock Markets Open Modestly Higher Amid Rising Oil Prices and Bond Yields

European stock markets opened slightly higher on September 28, 2026, with the Eurostoxx index gaining 0.1%, Germany's DAX up 0.2%, France's CAC 40 increasing by 0.4%, the UK's FTSE rising 0.3%, and Spain's IBEX adding 0.1%. However, Italy's FTSE MIB remained flat, indicating a lack of strong momentum behind the gains.

The modest rise in European equities comes amid a challenging market backdrop, particularly with oil prices climbing again. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil is trading up nearly 2% at $94.30 following former U.S. President Donald Trump's rejection of Iran's proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, although negotiations are expected to continue this week. This increase in oil prices raises concerns about inflation risks as energy costs remain elevated.

In addition, bond yields are also on the rise, with 10-year U.S. Treasury yields nudging back up to 5.20%. This situation complicates the outlook for equities, as investors weigh the potential for further tightening by the U.S. Federal Reserve in light of resilient economic data. The negative lead from U.S. futures, with S&P 500 futures down 0.4% and Nasdaq futures down 0.9%, adds to the uncertainty surrounding the European market's early gains.
