Federal Authorities Confiscate $560K in Hamas Cryptocurrency and Dismantle Terror Fundraising Network
Key Highlights
- Federal authorities confiscated more than $560,000 in digital currency connected to Hamas through three distinct warrant executions in 2025.
- Federal investigators gained control of domain names and hosting servers operating Hamas’s primary website, Alqassam.ps.
- Law enforcement utilized confidential human sources to track continuously changing cryptocurrency wallet addresses distributed via encrypted messaging platforms.
- The commandeered digital infrastructure enabled authorities to block additional contributions and collect information on thousands of prospective donors.
- The coordinated effort focused on Hamas’s armed faction, the Al-Qassam Brigades, disrupting their digital fundraising and recruitment capabilities.
The U.S. Justice Department revealed on September 1, 2026 that federal authorities had confiscated over $560,000 in digital currency connected to Hamas. Simultaneously, law enforcement dismantled the online platforms the organization utilized for fundraising and supporter recruitment.
The disclosure included five supporting court documents. Three affidavits, filed on March 25, June 25, and October 10, 2025, detail the cryptocurrency confiscations. Two additional documents, dated July 29 and August 18, 2026, pertain to the digital infrastructure seizures.
Hamas utilized an encrypted messaging platform to distribute constantly updated cryptocurrency wallet addresses to its supporters. Contributors were simultaneously pointed toward a fundraising portal associated with the organization.
Federal investigators collaborated with several confidential informants to identify and track these digital wallet addresses. This investigative work resulted in the confiscation of funds through three distinct enforcement actions throughout 2025.
The initial operation in March 2025 resulted in the recovery of approximately $201,400. According to federal prosecutors, that particular wallet network had processed more than $1.5 million since October 2024.
Federal Bureau Commandeers Hamas Digital Platform
The FBI’s field office in Albuquerque spearheaded the operation to commandeer the domain names and server infrastructure supporting Alqassam.ps, the primary digital platform for Hamas’s armed division, the Al-Qassam Brigades.
Gaining authority over these domains enabled the FBI to redirect cryptocurrency contributions before they could reach Hamas operatives. The action also provided investigators with intelligence regarding thousands of people who had interacted with the platform.
These individuals had made contact either to contribute digital currency or through conventional payment channels. Federal prosecutors indicated this intelligence would support future counterterrorism investigations.
Assistant Attorney General John A. Eisenberg stated the confiscations were designed to eliminate Hamas’s capacity to recruit supporters and finance operations through digital channels.
U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro emphasized that Hamas’s communication networks are “not secure” and its cryptocurrency holdings are “vulnerable.”
Operational Methodology
The FBI orchestrated efforts across several specialized units, including its Counterterrorism Division, Cyber Division, and the New York Field Office.
Brett Leatherman, Assistant Director overseeing the FBI’s Cyber Division, explained the bureau commandeered digital infrastructure and cryptocurrency assets to block terrorist organizations from exploiting online networks for financial gain.
Special Agent in Charge Justin Garris stated the objective was to diminish Hamas’s capacity to collect contributions and foster suspicion within its donor community.
Federal prosecutors characterized the operation as part of a sustained campaign to dismantle Hamas financing mechanisms in the aftermath of the October 7, 2023 attacks.
The matter is being handled by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia, with assistance from the National Security Division’s counterterrorism and cyber units.
