Federal Reserve Governor Waller Advocates for Flexible Rate Hikes Amid Persistent Inflation

Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller stated that additional interest rate hikes will likely be necessary to achieve the central bank's inflation target of 2%. Speaking at the Istanbul Economic Forum hosted by the Central Bank of the Republic of Türkiye, Waller emphasized that the pace of these hikes can be flexible and does not need to occur at consecutive meetings. This suggests that the Federal Reserve may consider pausing rate increases at its upcoming meeting on October 27-28, 2026, depending on economic data.

Waller expressed concern over persistent inflation, which has remained above the Fed's target for approximately five and a half years. He identified several ongoing inflationary pressures, including the impact of the Iran conflict on energy prices and increased demand driven by advancements in artificial intelligence. Despite a slowdown in job creation in September, he described the labor market as solid and stable, indicating that the Fed can prioritize inflation control without risking significant economic downturns.

The recent minutes from the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) echoed Waller's concerns, highlighting that energy costs and AI-related investments could sustain inflationary pressures. Waller also discussed the Fed's strategy regarding forward guidance, advocating for a communication approach that allows for flexibility in policy decisions while still signaling potential directions to the market. This method aims to help markets form expectations without the Fed committing to a fixed rate path that may need to be adjusted later.
