Trading Platform Robinhood Allocates $25M to Bitcoin Treasury Amid Crypto Expansion
TLDR
- The trading platform Robinhood has purchased $25 million in bitcoin for its corporate treasury.
- Johann Kerbrat, the company’s crypto executive, stated the acquisition demonstrates alignment with the digital asset community.
- This corporate bitcoin holding is distinct from approximately $25 billion in customer cryptocurrency assets under custody.
- The platform intends to roll out perpetual futures trading for qualified U.S. customers within months.
- BTC hovered around $84,280 while market participants anticipated the Federal Reserve’s FOMC minutes release.
Robinhood has confirmed the acquisition of $25 million in bitcoin for its corporate treasury. The announcement came on Wednesday, October 7, marking the trading platform’s entry into corporate bitcoin holdings.
Johann Kerbrat, who serves as Robinhood’s senior vice president and general manager overseeing crypto and international operations, revealed the purchase details. He discussed the strategic move during a conversation with The Block and while speaking at Singapore’s Token2049 conference.
According to Kerbrat, the acquisition serves as a demonstration of the platform’s dedication to digital assets. “We care deeply about bitcoin and the ecosystem around it,” he explained.
“For us, it’s more aligning our company and our vision with the crypto community,” Kerbrat emphasized.
Kerbrat noted that relative to the organization’s overall size, this represents a modest allocation. “Robinhood is a massive company at this point, with a market cap in the $100 billion [range]. So the $25 million worth of bitcoin is not going to change a lot of the current trajectory of the company,” he remarked.
The company’s stock finished Tuesday’s trading session at $112, declining 1.85%. This valuation positioned Robinhood’s market capitalization near $100 billion.
Treasury Bitcoin Distinct From Client Assets
This newly acquired bitcoin represents a separate holding from the cryptocurrency assets Robinhood safeguards for its user base. The platform maintains custody of approximately $25 billion in client-owned digital assets.
Within those customer holdings are over 185,000 bitcoin valued at roughly $15.6 billion, CoinGape data shows. Robinhood’s CEO Vlad Tenev had previously indicated the organization was evaluating the possibility of adding bitcoin to its corporate treasury.
Several publicly traded corporations have pursued similar bitcoin acquisition strategies. Strategy announced on Monday that it acquired an additional 334 bitcoin for approximately $28.7 million during the period spanning September 28 through October 4.
The company paid an average of $85,838.80 per bitcoin. Strategy’s cumulative bitcoin holdings now total 848,000 BTC.
Platform Broadens Digital Asset Offerings
Robinhood has been systematically expanding its cryptocurrency product suite. The previous week saw the announcement of plans to introduce perpetual futures contracts, commonly known as perps, for eligible U.S. customers within the coming months.
The platform will enable users to establish long or short positions across multiple assets including bitcoin, ether, Solana, XRP, Dogecoin, ADA, LINK and HYPE. Tenev characterized the offering as representing a “new chapter for U.S. derivatives.”
Additionally, the company continues developing Robinhood Chain, a Layer 2 blockchain network constructed using Arbitrum’s underlying technology. The network achieved public mainnet status in July. By Tuesday, its total value locked had climbed to $1.05 billion, according to The Block’s data.
Robinhood has simultaneously introduced Stock Tokens, enabling eligible participants to trade around the clock on Robinhood Chain. Kerbrat revealed that stock token trading volume has already reached levels sufficient to approach certain thresholds established under the SEC’s innovation exemption framework for tokenized U.S. securities.
The platform currently serves 28 million funded accounts, with 27 million located in the United States and 1 million internationally, Kerbrat disclosed. He also referenced Robinhood’s recent cryptocurrency services debut in the United Kingdom.
Following the announcement, bitcoin was trading in the vicinity of $84,280, CoinGape reported. The cryptocurrency fluctuated between $83,647 and $86,648 during the previous 24-hour period.
Trading activity increased 16% over the same timeframe as certain market participants liquidated positions amid the most recent escalation in U.S.-Iran tensions. Market observers are currently awaiting the Federal Reserve’s FOMC meeting minutes, scheduled for release on Wednesday.
