U.S. Proposes Significant Fee Increase for Work Authorization for International Students

The U.S. government has proposed a substantial increase in fees for international students seeking work authorization through the Optional Practical Training (OPT) program. The new proposal suggests a fee of $70,000, a sharp rise from the current fee of approximately $500. This change aims to regulate the employment landscape for foreign graduates in the United States.

In addition to the work authorization fee, the proposal includes a $30,000 charge for additional work training. If implemented, these fees could create significant barriers for international students looking to gain work experience in the U.S. after completing their studies.

The proposal is currently open for a 30-day public comment period, during which stakeholders can express their views. Following this period, the proposal may face legal challenges before it can take effect.
