U.S. Stocks Decline Amid Rising Oil Prices and Treasury Yields

U.S. stock futures indicate a lower opening as crude oil prices surge and Treasury yields rise. Crude oil futures have climbed nearly 5%, reaching approximately $92.62 per barrel, amid reports that U.S. President Donald Trump is considering renewed military action against Iran ahead of the upcoming midterm elections. This potential escalation raises concerns about the impact on energy infrastructure and regional shipping, which could further complicate inflationary pressures.

Treasury yields are also on the rise, with the 10-year yield surpassing 5.33%. Higher borrowing costs are expected to pose challenges for interest-sensitive sectors and may affect equity valuations. The Dow Jones Industrial Average is projected to open down 440 points, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 are also expected to see declines. European markets are similarly under pressure, with major indices in Germany, France, and the UK all reporting losses.

Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller, speaking in Istanbul, indicated that further interest rate hikes may be necessary to combat persistent inflation, although he noted that these increases do not need to occur at consecutive meetings. Waller emphasized that inflation remains elevated, driven by energy costs and other factors, and that the economy appears to be strengthening in the latter half of 2026. His comments suggest that while the Fed may pause rate hikes to assess economic data, the possibility of tightening remains open.
