Federal Reserve Official Suggests More Time Needed for Policy Decisions

Philip Jefferson, a member of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors, indicated that the central bank may require additional time to determine its next policy move regarding interest rates. He highlighted that inflation risks are currently skewed to the upside, suggesting that the Fed is cautious about making immediate changes to monetary policy.

Jefferson noted that the U.S. economy is facing a series of challenges, which he described as a 'cascade' of shocks. He emphasized that the Federal Reserve cannot evaluate each supply shock in isolation, as they collectively impact economic conditions. Despite these challenges, he expects near-term economic growth to continue at the pace observed in the first half of the year.

While Jefferson acknowledged the potential for elevated inflation in the short term, he also expressed an expectation for a decline in inflation rates thereafter. He clarified that there are no significant spillover effects from tariffs or energy prices currently influencing inflation.
