Four US Energy Firms Poised to Profit From South Korea’s Massive $200B Investment
Key Highlights
- South Korea has committed $200 billion toward major US energy infrastructure as part of a comprehensive $350 billion economic partnership
- An Alaska liquefied natural gas pipeline and terminal will receive $54 billion in funding through Glenfarne Group
- Eight nuclear power reactors spanning Ohio, Tennessee, South Carolina, and Kentucky will be financed with $120 billion
- Texas will see a $22.3 billion natural gas power facility constructed in Encinal to serve artificial intelligence data centers by 2029
- Major beneficiaries include ConocoPhillips, Westinghouse, Baker Hughes, and Doosan
President Donald Trump revealed a landmark $200 billion energy investment agreement with South Korea during a White House ceremony on Wednesday.
This energy package forms a critical component of a broader economic arrangement between Washington and Seoul. Under the comprehensive framework, South Korea committed to investing $350 billion in American projects while receiving preferential tariff treatment at 15% for most exported goods.
Alaska’s Liquefied Natural Gas Megaproject Details
The Korean investment allocates $54 billion specifically for Alaska’s ambitious natural gas infrastructure initiative. Central to this effort is a processing facility located on Alaska’s remote North Slope region.
A newly constructed 800-mile pipeline will transport natural gas from the processing plant to a terminal near Anchorage. The majority of this gas will undergo liquefaction before being exported to Asian markets.
Annual production capacity is projected at approximately 20 million metric tons of liquefied natural gas. This output would position the facility as America’s third-largest LNG operation based on current rankings.
Regulatory approvals are already secured, and the project has locked in agreements for portions of its anticipated production volume.
Trump characterized the endeavor as among the most significant energy undertakings in United States history. Project administrators estimate completion within five years under optimal circumstances.
Glenfarne Group, a private enterprise, spearheads the initiative with a 75% ownership stake. Alaska’s state government holds the remaining 25% interest.
ConocoPhillips has entered into a three-decade supply arrangement with Glenfarne, committing its gas production to the new pipeline infrastructure.
Baker Hughes will provide critical compression equipment for the operation and has taken an equity position in the venture.
According to Reuters reporting, the Alaska development remains contingent upon satisfying specific commercial and regulatory requirements. Certain financing arrangements continue under review by both American and Korean authorities.
Nuclear Power Expansion And Texas Generation Capacity
Korean financing will also support nuclear reactor construction across four American states. Planned locations include facilities in Ohio, Tennessee, South Carolina, and Kentucky.
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick indicated that Korea will direct $100 billion toward reactor construction. An extra $20 billion has been designated as reserve funding for potential overruns.
Combined generating capacity from these reactors could supply electricity to a minimum of 8 million residential properties. The facilities will also provide power for multiple large-scale data center operations.
Several reactors are anticipated to incorporate the AP1000 reactor technology. This design originates from Westinghouse Nuclear, a Pennsylvania-headquartered firm that recently submitted documentation for an initial public offering.
Westinghouse operates under the joint ownership of uranium producer Cameco and renewable energy company Brookfield Renewable Partners. Both parent organizations stand to gain from government-backed financing supporting the reactor program.
South Korean industrial manufacturer Doosan represents another potential beneficiary. The corporation specializes in producing pressure vessels and other essential reactor components.
Separate Reuters coverage indicated South Korea’s nuclear commitment totals $120 billion, encompassing two reactors utilizing Korea’s indigenous APR-1400 technology. Precise project specifications remain under development.
Lutnick confirmed Korean funding will also support a natural gas generation facility in Texas. The Encinal location will specifically target artificial intelligence data center electricity demands.
The Encinal facility boasts 6.47 gigawatt-hours of generating capacity. Full commercial operation is scheduled to commence in 2029.
Investment Structure And Profit Distribution
South Korea’s aggregate investment carries an annual ceiling of $20 billion. This limitation appears in the legally enforceable agreement governing the bilateral arrangement.
Project revenues will be divided equally between Korean and American stakeholders. This even distribution remains in effect until South Korea fully recoups its combined investment across all three major initiatives.
