European Stocks Rebound on Friday but End Week Lower

Major European stock indices closed higher on Friday, but the gains were insufficient to offset weekly declines. Germany's DAX index performed the best among the major indices, closing at 25,222.05, up 1.13% for the day but down 0.73% for the week. The French CAC index rose by 0.79% to finish at 7,897.20, while the UK's FTSE 100 increased by 0.32% to 10,461.94. In contrast, Spain's Ibex index led the losses, closing at 19,085.31, down 3.12% for the week.

European benchmark 10-year yields fell on Friday, with Germany's yield declining by 6.9 basis points to 3.460%. However, French and Italian yields experienced an increase over the week despite today's drop. The French yield ended at 4.861%, up 2.7 basis points for the week, while Italy's yield was at 4.616%, up 2.2 basis points for the week. This widening of yield spreads indicates that German bonds outperformed their French and Italian counterparts.

In the U.S., the employment report for September revealed a modest increase in nonfarm payrolls by just 29,000, with the unemployment rate holding steady at 4.2%. This report initially suggested reduced pressure on the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates. However, U.S. Treasury yields reversed earlier declines, with the 10-year yield rising to approximately 5.264%. Meanwhile, U.S. stock markets maintained their gains, with the Nasdaq indices leading the way. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose by 0.29%, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite increased by 0.65% and 1.14%, respectively.
