Tether Launches Bitcoin-Native USDT Through Utexo Partnership This Month
TLDR
- USDT is deploying on Bitcoin’s mainnet this month via Utexo, a project licensed by Tether to issue the stablecoin.
- The stablecoin originally debuted on Bitcoin in 2014 but gradually migrated to Ethereum and Tron networks.
- The deployment uses RGB protocol technology to maintain transaction privacy off Bitcoin’s public blockchain.
- Users will be able to conduct confidential USDT transfers, swap BTC for USDT without exchanges, and secure loans using bitcoin collateral.
- Integration with the Lightning Network is scheduled to follow the mainnet deployment.
The world’s largest stablecoin by market capitalization is making its way back to Bitcoin’s blockchain this month. Utexo, a company that secured a commercial license from Tether, will facilitate USDT’s deployment on the Bitcoin network.
With a market capitalization approaching $190 billion, USDT initially launched on Bitcoin’s network in 2014 using the Omni protocol.
As blockchain technology evolved, the bulk of USDT transactions migrated to alternative networks, particularly Ethereum and Tron. By 2023, Tether had discontinued new USDT issuance through the Omni protocol as this transition progressed.
Last month, Tether’s CEO Paolo Ardoino teased the announcement. He shared a cryptic message on X stating “It’s coming home,” signaling USDT’s planned return to its original blockchain home.
How Utexo’s Privacy System Works
Established in 2025, Utexo secured $7.5 million in capital this year. The platform will facilitate USDT issuance on Bitcoin while offering infrastructure for exchanges, digital wallets, and payment processors to integrate the stablecoin.
The technology combines RGB protocol functionality with Bitcoin’s UTXO architecture. UTXOs represent unspent outputs from previous bitcoin transactions, functioning much like change received from a cash payment.
The system employs client-side validation technology. This approach keeps transaction information private and off Bitcoin’s public blockchain, with validation occurring directly between transacting parties.
Bitcoin’s blockchain serves solely as an ownership verification mechanism. This contrasts sharply with Ethereum and Tron, where account balances and transaction histories are publicly visible on their respective ledgers.
Tether’s treasury holds approximately 100,000 BTC, valued at roughly $8.4 billion as of mid-August. According to Utexo co-founder Viktor Ihnatiuk, Bitcoin has consistently remained a strategic priority for Tether’s operations.
Three Main Uses for USDT on Bitcoin
Utexo has identified three primary applications for its Bitcoin-based USDT system. First, users can conduct confidential USDT transfers peer-to-peer.
Second, the platform enables atomic swaps between native BTC and USDT, eliminating the need for centralized exchange intermediaries. Third, it facilitates collateralized lending, allowing users to borrow against native bitcoin without converting it to wrapped tokens on other blockchains.
Wrapped bitcoin products like WBTC currently force users to tokenize their BTC before utilizing it across different networks. Utexo’s infrastructure is designed to eliminate this conversion requirement.
Privacy protections have inherent limitations. Unlike Ethereum, where Tether can freeze specific addresses, Utexo cannot freeze individual UTXOs.
To address compliance concerns, the platform will maintain a blacklist of UTXOs associated with illicit activity. This list will be distributed to exchanges and service providers to prevent flagged funds from circulating.
Ihnatiuk clarified that blacklisted UTXOs would become effectively stranded. They couldn’t be transferred to bridges, used for minting operations, or moved to alternative networks such as Ethereum or Tron.
Over 450 companies have registered interest in Utexo’s platform to date. While this includes exchanges and wallet services, no official partnership announcements have been made.
Discussions with major financial institutions are reportedly underway. Utexo has maintained confidentiality regarding the identities of these potential institutional partners.
The mainnet deployment on Bitcoin is scheduled for this month. Subsequent phases will introduce Lightning Network compatibility, Bitcoin’s second-layer payment solution designed for faster transactions.
The objective is to enable USDT to function as a fee payment mechanism on Lightning. This approach parallels Circle’s implementation of USDC on Arc, its proprietary blockchain infrastructure.
The Bitcoin mainnet launch will provide an initial market test for demand around private stablecoin transfers, direct BTC-USDT exchanges, and bitcoin-collateralized lending through Utexo’s platform.
