BitMEX Exchange Closes Doors After More Than a Decade of Operations
Key Takeaways
- The platform will terminate all exchange operations on September 23 following over a decade in the cryptocurrency derivatives sector.
- Trading services including spot markets, conversion features and primary derivatives contracts have been discontinued prior to the complete shutdown.
- All active positions will be automatically settled at the applicable settlement price when the platform ceases operations.
- Users retain the ability to withdraw their assets following the closure, though monthly fees and enhanced verification procedures may be implemented.
- The exchange allegedly pursued acquisition opportunities at approximately $1 billion valuation without securing a deal.
BitMEX is permanently closing its cryptocurrency trading platform after operating for more than eleven years, marking the conclusion of what was once a leading name in digital asset derivatives trading. The exchange will officially terminate all trading services at 04:00 UTC on September 23.
The shutdown represents the final stage of a systematic wind-down process that has progressively eliminated the platform’s trading offerings. Bitcoin and Ethereum derivative products were settled on September 16, while spot trading concluded on September 21 and conversion services terminated on September 22.
Final Day for BitMEX Trading Operations
All trading positions remaining open at the time of closure will be automatically settled according to the corresponding contract price or index using BitMEX’s established settlement protocols. The platform had already restricted users from initiating new positions while permitting them to close out existing trades.
Following the shutdown, BitMEX will maintain a restricted version of its website allowing customers to access account balances, review transaction records and process withdrawals of remaining digital assets. Any deposits transmitted after the official closure time may not be processed and could potentially be lost.
Account holders who maintain balances on the platform beyond September 23 will incur maintenance fees. Accounts with completed verification will face monthly charges calculated as the greater of $50 or 1% annually.
API-based withdrawals will function until September 28, after which the website interface will serve as the primary withdrawal method. The platform is also restricting USDT, USDC and ETH withdrawals exclusively to the Ethereum network beginning on that date.
Acquisition Negotiations Ended Without Agreement
BitMEX allegedly dedicated approximately two years attempting to locate a buyer before ultimately choosing to cease operations. Competing exchanges and digital wallet provider Exodus were reportedly among entities involved in potential acquisition discussions, with BitMEX pursuing a sale price approaching $1 billion.
These negotiations concluded without reaching an agreement. Diminishing trading volumes also weakened the platform’s competitive standing in a marketplace increasingly controlled by larger centralized exchanges and emerging decentralized perpetual trading platforms.
BitMEX futures trading volume had surpassed $100 billion monthly during certain periods in 2021 but experienced significant declines in subsequent years. Industry data from Kaiko referenced in media reports indicated daily trading volume around $400,000 and market share beneath 0.01% at the time of the closure announcement.
Nevertheless, BitMEX established an influential legacy in cryptocurrency trading development. Its XBTUSD contract contributed to mainstreaming perpetual swap instruments, which feature no expiration date and employ periodic funding rate payments to maintain price alignment with the underlying asset.
Platform Issues Withdrawal Guidelines and Security Warnings
BitMEX has encouraged all remaining account holders to process their asset withdrawals and stay vigilant against fraudulent phishing schemes. The company emphasized that it does not provide expedited withdrawal services and cautioned users about messages claiming to offer faster fund access.
Certain returning users may be required to refresh their identity verification details before processing withdrawals. Enhanced security verification procedures, test transaction requirements and minimum withdrawal thresholds may apply based on individual account status and asset type.
BitMEX maintains that customer assets remain completely backed and highlighted that the platform never experienced customer fund losses due to security breaches throughout its eleven-plus years of operation. The company referenced its proof-of-reserves and liability documentation throughout the shutdown process.
The September 23 closure concludes BitMEX’s operational chapter in cryptocurrency trading, though account holders with remaining funds will retain access to withdrawal capabilities.
