French Private Sector Activity Sees Strongest Growth in 25 Months

In September, France's private sector activity returned to expansion territory, with the composite Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) registering at 51.2, surpassing expectations of 48.7 and marking the highest level in over two years. The services sector played a significant role in this growth, with the services PMI reaching 51.4, the strongest reading in ten months, while the manufacturing PMI recorded a slight decline at 50.3, below the anticipated 50.9.

The improvement in demand conditions was reflected in rising sales activity within the services sector, although employment levels continued to decline, and overall business optimism weakened. Notably, new orders saw a marginal increase, the first in ten months, and the contraction in new foreign business was the softest recorded this year, indicating a potential stabilization in exports.

Despite the positive growth indicators, inflation pressures intensified in the private sector, with both input and output prices rising at accelerated rates for the first time since May. Panel members cited fuel price increases, along with rising component, energy, and metal prices, as key contributors to this inflation. This data is particularly relevant as the European Central Bank (ECB) prepares for its upcoming policy decision in October, with market expectations for a potential rate hike slightly increasing to around 47% following this report.
