Germany's September Manufacturing PMI Shows Resilience Amid Inflation Pressures

Germany's flash manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) for September registered at 53.8, slightly below the expected 54.0 and down from the previous month's 54.3. The services PMI also exceeded expectations, coming in at 52.9 compared to the anticipated 50.0, while the composite PMI stood at 53.8, surpassing the forecast of 51.8.

Phil Smith, Economics Associate Director at S&P Global Market Intelligence, noted that German businesses are demonstrating resilience this month, with an increase in output growth and steady expectations for the future. Employment has risen for the second consecutive month, despite ongoing inflationary pressures. The data indicates the strongest rise in business activity in nearly a year, with the service sector returning to growth after a period of stagnation following the outbreak of conflict in the Middle East.

The increase in new work is beginning to strain business capacity, as evidenced by a rise in backlogged orders, which is contributing to improved labor market conditions. While job creation has primarily occurred in the service sector, there are signs of stabilization in factory employment, with manufacturers reporting increased work-in-hand and optimism about future output. Smith remarked on the surprising acceleration of PMI growth despite rising energy costs and interest rate hikes from the European Central Bank (ECB), suggesting that the current data does not significantly alter the ECB's focus on inflation.
