France's PMI Indicates Economic Expansion Amid Rising Inflation Pressures
France's flash services Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) for September rose to 51.4, surpassing expectations of 48.3 and marking the highest level in ten months. The manufacturing PMI also showed a slight decline, coming in at 50.3 compared to the anticipated 50.9. The composite PMI, which combines both services and manufacturing, reached 51.2, exceeding the forecast of 48.7. These figures indicate a return to expansion for French business activity, driven primarily by a stronger performance in the services sector.
Despite the positive growth indicators, the report highlighted increasing inflation pressures within France's private sector. Both input and output prices rose at accelerated rates for the first time since May, with rising costs being passed on to clients. Panel members noted that fuel price increases, along with higher component prices, energy, and metals, were significant contributors to the inflation surge. This development raises concerns for the European Central Bank (ECB) as it prepares for its upcoming policy decision in October.
Market expectations for a potential interest rate hike by the ECB have slightly increased, with current odds sitting at around 47% for a 25 basis points increase. The initial market reaction to the PMI data has been subdued, but the results from France may set a higher benchmark for upcoming PMI reports from other countries, particularly if they also reflect stronger demand and rising prices. Investors will be closely monitoring these trends as they assess the ECB's response to inflationary pressures.
