      TLDR

      • European equities rebounded Friday following Thursday’s slide to three-month lows.
      • Despite Friday’s recovery, the STOXX 600 faces its steepest weekly decline since April.
      • French 10-year government bonds reached their highest yields in over two decades.

European equity markets posted gains on Friday, staging a recovery after benchmark indexes slumped to three-month lows in the previous session.

The continent-wide STOXX 600 index advanced 0.9%. Its counterpart, the STOXX 50, climbed 1.1%, supported by declining crude oil prices and retreating government bond yields.

Despite Friday’s recovery, European markets experienced significant turbulence over the five-day period. The STOXX 50 declined 2% for the week. The STOXX 600 dropped 1.9%. Both indexes are tracking toward their steepest weekly losses since April.

      Germany’s DAX advanced 0.9% during Friday’s session. France’s CAC 40 increased 0.6%. London’s FTSE 100 remained relatively flat.

French Bond Yields Hit Multi-Decade High

Earlier this week’s market turmoil stemmed from a substantial selloff in European sovereign debt. Concerns intensified following France’s release of its 2027 budget proposal, which raised questions about fiscal discipline.

The yield on France’s 10-year government bond climbed to levels unseen since 2002. Market participants are demanding higher compensation to hold French government debt amid uncertainty surrounding the nation’s fiscal trajectory.

The spread between French and German 10-year yields expanded beyond 140 basis points. This marks the widest differential between the two since Europe’s sovereign debt crisis in 2012.

These fiscal pressures weighed on the euro. The common currency declined to its weakest position against the U.S. dollar since 2025.

Friday brought news via Reuters that European Union member states were considering a French proposal to tap strategic diesel reserves. Brent crude oil retreated toward $99 per barrel on the report. Declining energy prices helped alleviate inflation concerns and contributed to lower government bond yields across the region, including France.

Inflation Data and Jobs Report Ahead

Market participants are anticipating the preliminary September inflation figures for the Eurozone. Analyst consensus points to an increase to 3.6% from the prior month’s 3.2%. Rising energy costs associated with Middle Eastern conflict are expected to drive the acceleration.

Focus is simultaneously shifting across the Atlantic. The United States is scheduled to release its September employment report shortly. Robust labor market data could reinforce the Federal Reserve’s position of maintaining elevated interest rates for an extended period. Such an outcome might drive global bond yields higher.

Individual equity performance showed dramatic swings this week. Online trading platform IG Group plummeted as much as 27% intraday, touching its lowest valuation since April 2025. The firm projected third quarter revenues of approximately £240 million. This represents a 14% year-over-year decline.

JD Wetherspoon shares surged more than 8% following the pub operator’s announcement of improved recent sales performance. The company indicated full year earnings should align with analyst expectations, despite reporting a 28% decline in annual profit attributed to elevated operating costs.

Technology and industrial sectors paced Friday’s rally. ASML Holding advanced 2.4%. Siemens increased 1.1%. Inditex gained 2.2%.

Infineon jumped 5.9%. Thyssenkrupp surged 4.5%. Stellantis rose 4.1%. These companies ranked among the top performers on the STOXX 600.

Sanofi posted the index’s largest decline, falling 3.2%.

Upcoming inflation statistics and employment figures will provide critical direction for markets entering the following week.
