U.S. Nonfarm Payrolls Show Significant Shortfall in September

The U.S. nonfarm payrolls increased by only 29,000 in September 2026, falling short of the expected rise of 84,000. This disappointing figure reflects a slowdown in job growth amid broader economic concerns. The unemployment rate also saw a slight uptick, rising to 4.2%, compared to the forecasted rate of 4.1%.

Private sector employment added just 46,000 jobs, while government employment experienced a decline of 17,000 positions. Additionally, wage growth showed signs of cooling, with a month-over-month increase of only 0.13% and a year-over-year growth of 3.02%.

Revisions to previous months' payroll data further highlight the weakening labor market, with August's job gains adjusted down from 162,000 to 133,000, and July's figures revised to show a loss of 10,000 jobs. These trends raise concerns about the overall health of the U.S. economy as it navigates ongoing challenges.
