France's Inflation Rate Increases Sharply in September

France's consumer price index (CPI) rose by 3.1% year-on-year in September, up from a preliminary estimate of 3.0% and significantly higher than the previous year's increase of 2.4%. The harmonized index of consumer prices (HICP) also showed a rise of 3.4%, matching the preliminary figure but up from 2.6% in the prior year. These final figures highlight a notable increase in inflation, raising concerns for the European Central Bank (ECB) as it navigates monetary policy in the euro area.

The surge in inflation is primarily driven by energy prices, which increased by 21.3% annually in September, compared to 16.7% in August. This spike is largely attributed to the ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. Additionally, core inflation, which excludes volatile items like energy, rose to 1.5% from 1.1%, with services inflation contributing to this increase, climbing to 2.4% from 1.9%.

While core inflation remains below the ECB's 2% target, the upward trend poses challenges for policymakers. The ECB has already raised interest rates twice this summer, but the recent inflation data may prompt discussions about further rate hikes. If rising energy costs begin to influence service prices and wage growth more significantly, the case for another rate increase in December could strengthen.
