ECB Policymaker Affirms Limited Spread of Euro Zone Inflation Beyond Energy

Alvaro Santos Pereira, the governor of the Banco de Portugal and a member of the European Central Bank's (ECB) Governing Council, stated that energy-driven inflation in the euro zone is not extending to other sectors of the economy. Speaking at the Bangkok Economic Festival, he noted that the proportion of goods and services experiencing price increases of more than 3% or 4% has remained stable over the past two years, providing a reassuring signal for the ECB as it assesses inflation risks.

Santos Pereira emphasized that the ECB can tolerate an energy shock as long as it remains confined to energy prices. He warned, however, that if inflation begins to broaden, central banks would be compelled to take action. He identified natural gas prices as a significant risk factor, particularly with the approach of winter, which could impact energy costs for households and businesses.

Additionally, Santos Pereira attributed the recent rise in bond yields more to fiscal issues than to inflation concerns, suggesting that the ECB is unlikely to adjust its monetary policy in response to current yield fluctuations. The upcoming euro zone inflation figures and the trajectory of natural gas prices will be critical indicators for the ECB's future policy decisions.
