Speculation Grows Over China's US Treasury Holdings Routed Through Canada

Recent reports suggest that China may be holding more US government debt than previously indicated, following a significant increase in Canada’s reported holdings of US securities. According to Bloomberg, Canada’s stockpile of US Treasuries and bonds has surged to nearly $600 billion, raising questions among bond investors about the true nature of these holdings. Analysts, including DoubleLine’s Vitaliy Liberman, have pointed out that this increase may be linked to China moving US securities to custodian banks outside the United States, thereby obscuring its actual role in financing US budget deficits.

While official figures show a decline in China’s reported ownership of US Treasuries, some investors believe this reflects a strategic shift rather than a reduction in holdings. The theory suggests that China is attempting to create the appearance of decoupling from the US amid ongoing trade tensions. This speculation is bolstered by the way US Treasury data is compiled, which records securities by the country where they are held in custody, rather than by the ultimate owner. As a result, bonds owned by one country but held in another can appear under the latter's name, complicating the assessment of individual countries' true positions.

The implications of these developments are significant, as China has historically been one of the largest foreign buyers of US government debt. A genuine retreat by China could diminish demand for Treasuries at a time when the US is facing heavy borrowing needs. Conversely, if hidden holdings are indeed substantial, it may indicate that demand for US debt remains more stable than the headline figures suggest. Investors are now closely monitoring upcoming releases of US Treasury data for any unusual trends in custodial centers and await any official comments from Chinese or Canadian authorities.
