US Inflation Rate Rises to 3.7% in September Amid Narrowing Price Pressures

Consumer prices in the United States increased by 3.7% in the year leading up to September 2026, up from 3.4% in August, according to the latest Consumer Price Index report. The monthly rise was 0.6%, aligning with forecasts. Core inflation, which excludes the often volatile food and energy sectors, rose to 2.6% from 2.4%, slightly exceeding the anticipated 2.5%.

Despite these increases, analysts from Bloomberg Economics suggest that the situation may not be as dire as the headline figures indicate. Chief US economist Anna Wong pointed out that a measure of inflation breadth, which assesses how widespread price increases are, has actually declined in September. This measure counts the percentage of Consumer Price Index components that are rising faster than 3% annually, providing a different perspective on inflation trends.

Historically, during the inflation surge of 2022, about 80% of CPI components were experiencing price increases above 3%. Currently, this figure has dropped to around 40% based on a six-month measure, down from approximately 55% earlier in the year. This narrowing of price pressures suggests that inflation may be less entrenched, which could be more reassuring for the Federal Reserve as it navigates monetary policy.
