Moody's Revises Nike's Outlook to Negative, Forecasts Earnings Decline Until 2028

Moody's Ratings has changed its outlook on Nike to negative while affirming the company's A2 credit rating. The agency cited a prolonged turnaround period that is taking longer than previously anticipated. Moody's expects Nike's revenue and earnings to decline through the fiscal year ending in May 2027 and into fiscal 2028, indicating that the recovery of the sportswear giant is further away than initially thought.

The negative outlook raises concerns about a potential future downgrade, which could impact credit investors if Nike's earnings do not stabilize. Although the A2 rating remains in the upper-medium tier of investment grade, the extended timeline for falling revenue and earnings suggests that the company's strategic actions are likely to pressure its financial performance over the coming years.

For bondholders, the outlook change serves as a warning rather than an immediate risk adjustment, as the rating itself remains unchanged. However, equity investors may view this development as a signal of ongoing challenges for Nike, particularly as they await upcoming quarterly results that will indicate whether the company's revenue declines are narrowing or continuing as forecasted.
