Moody's Downgrades Nike Outlook Amid Demand Concerns

Moody's has changed its outlook on Nike to negative, citing weak consumer demand as the primary concern rather than tariffs. This marks a shift from a year ago when the agency focused on tariff-related cost pressures. Nike's recent financial results indicate a 4% decline in revenue, with a significant 26% drop in sales in Greater China on a currency-neutral basis, and a 28% decrease in sales for its Converse brand.

The agency's assessment highlights that the challenges facing Nike are linked to a prolonged turnaround process and declining earnings, which are expected to persist into fiscal 2028. Although Nike's gross margin improved slightly due to lower logistics costs, the company did not report any significant impact from tariffs during the latest quarter. Instead, the revenue decline is attributed to strategic decisions to reduce discount-led sales to enhance brand pricing power.

Nike is currently implementing a restructuring program known as Pace, which involves approximately $1 billion in charges but is projected to yield around $2.5 billion in savings, primarily in fiscal years 2029 and 2030. While new tariffs on goods from China and Vietnam could pose future risks, the immediate focus for investors will be the upcoming investor day on November 16-17, where Nike's management is expected to outline strategies for regaining consumer interest, particularly in the crucial Chinese market.
