Gold Prices Surge as US Treasury Yields Decline

Gold prices have increased by approximately $40 during the Asian trading session, coinciding with a notable drop in 10-year US Treasury yields, which have fallen more than 20 basis points from their recent highs. This movement follows the release of September's Consumer Price Index data, which indicated a headline inflation rate of 3.7% and a core inflation rate of 2.6%, both slightly exceeding market expectations. The initial spike in Treasury yields prompted speculation about a potential Federal Reserve rate hike in December, but the subsequent recovery in yields has provided support for gold prices.

A Bloomberg report has suggested that China may not be significantly reducing its holdings of US debt, as previously thought. Instead, it is speculated that China could be transferring its US securities to custodian banks outside the United States, which would mask its actual role in financing US deficits. This shift could explain the recent surge in Canada's reported holdings of US debt securities, which have approached nearly $600 billion, despite ongoing trade tensions between the two countries. If confirmed, this would indicate that foreign demand for Treasuries remains more stable than official data suggests, alleviating some concerns that had driven yields higher.

The relationship between lower Treasury yields and gold prices is significant, as lower yields diminish the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets like gold. Additionally, geopolitical tensions, particularly involving Iran, and concerns over heavy borrowing by companies in the artificial intelligence sector have further fueled demand for safe-haven assets. The ongoing dynamics in the bond market and their impact on gold prices will be closely monitored in the coming sessions.
