Germany's Wholesale Prices Rise Significantly in September, Heightening Inflation Concerns

In September 2026, Germany experienced a notable increase in wholesale prices, rising by 1.9% month-on-month and 8.7% year-on-year. This annual increase marks the highest rate since February 2023, raising concerns about inflation within the German economy. The surge in prices is largely attributed to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which has led to increased costs for energy products and intermediate goods, particularly metals.

The primary driver of the annual price increase is the significant rise in mineral oil products, which saw a staggering 48.8% increase compared to September 2025. In addition, prices for non-ferrous ores, non-ferrous metals, and non-ferrous semi-finished metal products rose by 24.9% year-on-year and 2.1% month-on-month, contributing to the overall inflationary pressures.

As businesses grapple with these rising input costs, the challenge remains in balancing their expenses without passing significant burdens onto consumers. While higher wholesale prices do not immediately translate to consumer inflation, persistent cost pressures could complicate the situation, particularly for the European Central Bank as it navigates the implications of rising energy prices on the broader economy.
